Protect your skin with acne treatment for teens, advices Dr. Peter Vitulli of A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic and Laser Surgery located in Jupiter, FL
ACenter for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery in Jupiter, Florida, appreciates the emotional toll that acne can take on patients, especially teens. We blend a kind, caring, and empathetic approach with the considerable skill and experience of our Board-certified dermatologist and osteopath, , Dr. Peter Vitulli.

Acne treatment for teens

As with all conditions at our specialty center, effective treatment starts with understanding your concerns. There are many myths associated with acne; for instance, that outbreaks are caused by dirty skin or by eating too much chocolate. The truth is, acne arises when excess sebum (oil) and dead skin cells clog hair follicles. Among teens, this process is often triggered by hormonal changes. Androgen hormones can cause the sebaceous glands that produce oil to go into overdrive. Likewise, some types of makeup and skin and hair products can contribute to acne by clogging pores.

Additionally, Dr. Vitulli needs to evaluate your skin as acne comes in so many different forms. Whiteheads and blackheads, for instance, require different approaches to treatment than papules, nodules, or cysts. Furthermore, he will “grade” acne on a scale (“1” for mild acne to “4” for severe acne) to determine the best treatment to improve your acne or to reduce the frequency and severity of outbreaks.

Depending on what he finds during an evaluation and after speaking with you, Dr. Vitulli may recommend:
  • Mild cleansers that contain antibacterial or exfoliating ingredients like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid
  • Topical medications applied to the skin, which reduce bacteria and soothe inflammation
  • Systemic medications that work throughout the body; for instance, antibiotics and corticosteroids
  • Non-comedogenic makeup and hair care products
  • Professional therapies available at our office, including light-based treatments and chemical peels
Never pop or pick at your zits, which further damages your skin and increases the risk of permanent scarring. Additionally, it’s important to follow instructions for medications and care as directed by your doctor. Many acne medications increase your skin’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light from the sun. So, it’s important to practice sun avoidance and protection, which is always a healthy idea for your skin anyway. In partnership with A Center for Dermatology, Cosmetic & Laser Surgery, acne will be history. Contact us to schedule your evaluation. Get ready to reveal your healthiest skin and confidence!
